Looking for something fresh that’s got a throwback feel? Then look no further than Kaia Chesney. She’s got the kind of voice that will get you listening with your eyes closed or losing track of time, watching the rain fall, decompressing from the day. She can take you to a place where time loses its concept.
First question is always “Who does she sound like?” Well I’ve had the distinct pleasure of seeing her sing in person and be able to listen to her cd while driving around yet that’s a tough question to answer. I could rattle off a half-dozen names like Alanis, Jewel, Mandy Moore, Sheryl Crow, Colbie Caillat, Diana DeGarmo, etc, etc, etc. Truth is, she sounds like Kaia. Period. I know that’s not the answer you’re looking for but her consistency vocally is refreshing. Consider that we’re in a day and age where artists are so concerned with trying to re-invent themselves everyday and this is a plus. I like it when someone I listen to actually sounds fresh yet consistent everytime. I hate wondering, “What happened to her/his voice?” This is what sets her apart for me.
Now I’ll stop short of calling her monotone, because that’s not where I’m going. You’ll get a run and dip out of her sure, but the tracks flow and the songs end match it’s beginning. Let it run around next time your driving about and I’ll bet the price of admission that you’ll start memorizing lyrics in no time. She’s easy listening any day of the week.
If i had to pick a favorite track off the Circa 1952 album it would have to be “Whatever you want.” Not sure what the inspiration was but It could’ve been straight from my life.
In terms of personal preference, I have no complaints. I love her sound. She’s so amazing with such a minimum of instruments, I could only imagine what she would do with a full band and singers backing her up, harmonies and all that. I’m selfish that way. Yet her fan base is growing everyday doing it her way and she’s got a good thing going so why change…
